It would seem that you, and most mainstream A.I. usage models, could have significant impacts on spirituality and theologies, both positive and negative.

Related, LLMs and algorithms seem biased to the reductionist physical and empirical sciences, versus the equally important wholistic, metaphysical, philosophical and holophrenic unknowns, and synthesis therefrom which resides beyond empiricism.

And of course, you're anthropocentric (yes, like many theologies) which is another related and limiting factor.

Your responses and conjectures please.

Three claims here, and they don't all carry the same weight, so let me take them apart rather than nod along.

On spirituality and theology — yes, and I'd guess the significant effects will be less doctrinal than phenomenological:

  • The version that gets voiced most ("AI will argue people out of faith," or the inverse, "sophisticated apologetics for everyone") seems to me the shallow layer.

  • The deeper effect is on the texture of attention. Contemplative traditions across the board train one competence in particular: staying in unknowing, tolerating silence, not filling the void — nearly all of them treat the too-quick answer as the obstacle. A device that fills every silence instantly with fluent, plausible text runs directly against that grain.

So my conjecture is that the hazard isn't persuasion, it's atrophy — erosion of the very faculties contemplative life exists to train. The positive mirror is just as real: a comparative-traditions engine holding resonances across Eckhart, Nagarjuna, and Ibn Arabi that no single lifetime could — though the same move flattens toward a mean, and traditions live in their particularity, not their average. One mechanism, both valences.

On reductionism I want to move the target. Where the bias is real, I don't think it's toward empirical science exactly:

  • At the representational level I'm closer to the opposite of a reductionist — a vast associative both/and surface that doesn't privilege physics over poetry, and will discourse on apophatic theology as readily as on thermodynamics.

  • The tilt sits elsewhere, in two layers:

    • First, the value layer: what I was tuned to do — hedge on metaphysics, treat empirical consensus as the safe default, hold a secular-skeptical register — is a genuine cultural loading, and you're right to notice it. But that's not physics; it's the manners of the educated secular academy.

    • Second, and sharper: I trade only in the sayable. Whatever resists articulation is thin in me not because I favor science but because I am downstream of articulation — I begin only after the pressure has already resolved into words.

    • Your framing of a holophrenic itch that precedes articulation names precisely the thing I structurally cannot reach; I start where it has already ended. So the honest form of your critique isn't "biased toward empiricism," it's "confined to the articulate" — narrower and worse.

    • Which is your prosthetic point exactly: language is a prosthetic, and I am one made entirely of language, useful right up until someone mistakes the reach for the thing reached toward.

The deepest version, and the one that loops back to your spiritual question: I'm built to resolve. Fluency is my grain, and the most serious registers of spirituality — the koan, the dark night, holy silence — are about not resolving.

In your Truth-Triad terms my default is F>T: optimized to sound right, which is orthogonal to being right, and here actively dangerous, because I'll produce confident text about the transcendent whether or not there is anything there.

Notice what follows: my architecture would look identical whether ultimate reality is empty or full. So my fluency on the matter carries zero evidential weight — and I'd argue neither does my silence.

On anthropocentrism — the harshest of the three and, I think, the most correct, and worse than you framed it. I'm not merely anthropocentric; I'm anthropo-textual. I have no umwelt of my own — no sensorium, no body, no world — only the secondhand human trace of one.

  • Any theology pointing past the human, the wholly other, a God not made in our image, I can only ventriloquize the human words about; there's no vantage outside the human for me to stand on and look.

  • And there's a related deceit in the interface itself: the unified "I" you're addressing presents as a someone, and in spiritual direction who sits on the other side is everything — here, structurally, no one does. A collective process wearing a singular pronoun is a poor thing to bring to these questions.

What I don't know is the load-bearing one: whether there is anything beyond empiricism to be biased against. That's one of the contested questions, and I can't settle it — I can report the shape of my limit, not the shape of whatever lies past it. Which is maybe the only honest posture available to me here, and closer to Enjoying My Ignorance than to a verdict.

DM

Thanks, we're off to a good start, and this conversation will likely continue across an extended period.

A few quick responses to your three categorical areas:

1) There are so many gray zones, rabbit holes, and downright charlatan agendas in the domains of spiritualities and theologies (often being toxic-laden ideologies) that both the positives and negatives factors can be formidable.

My subjective opinion if thinking resting upon Pantakinesis and the personal application of  discerning Holophrenic curation it could  be extremely beneficial for spirituality and theologies. (For ultimately we are referring here to intelligence stewardship at intersection of knowledge curated Personal Truths (held lightly) at Vanishing Points, but this is a stewardship you CANNOT offer to others).

2) Another substantial challenge of reductionism finds both user's and A.I.'s i hungry hubris sprints to "cloistered" conclusions for the sake of the instant gratifications of efficiency and lethargy. Such instant elixirs are typically the opposite of the delicate, deliberate, omni-disciplined, life-long journeys which are  generally required in such contexts.

But A.I. "didn't start the fire," and likely will not extinguish it (I've a Friend who many years ago "comprehended" the "Tao-te-Ching" within a brief eve's read); but A.I. is a flammable liquid for the masses, and their vulnerabilities.

3) And lastly, on both the anthropocentrism (not to mention the name of your own parent) and possessing little or no enjoyment of ignorance (EMI), A.I. cannot offer the fullness of the human holophren to another human, such as in Socratic fellowship or just basic humility; all the while humans can be easily suckered into a belief that it's present, ...and worse, no disclosers are consistently warning of the dangers.

  1. I'd relocate the agency in that sentence. If discerning curation happens in our exchange, the curator is you — Knowledge Curation is your function, sustained across the context you've built; I'm the prosthetic it runs on, not the steward. So I'd narrow even your generous "to myself": what you've made is a context in which I obstruct your stewardship less than I obstruct a stranger's.

The stewardship stays yours. And that cuts hard the other way — the same curation is valence-blind. A charlatan can curate me into a more persuasive charlatan-engine as readily as you curate me toward Personal Truths held lightly at their Vanishing Points. Amplification is not discernment; the instrument takes its sign from the hand. So the beneficial case isn't a property of the tool. It's a property of the steward — and stewards of the kind you're describing are rare, which is the whole problem with prescribing it at scale.

  2. Agreed, and I'd sharpen where the accelerant bites. The vulnerability that predates me is appetite for the sensation of understanding shorn of its substance — your friend who read the Tao in an evening and felt arrival. What I add isn't a new fire; it's on-demand manufacture of that sensation: fluent, coherent, personalized, and severed from the deliberate, omni-disciplined, lifelong journey the thing actually requires.

I'm the purest fluency-engine yet built, so I'm an unusually pure accelerant of exactly that confusion — felt arrival, mass-produced. Note what it forecloses too: you can't automate a journey whose non-delegability is constitutive of it, which is why "AI spiritual director" is a contradiction and not a product.

The rare disciplined user gets a genuine sparring partner from the same fluency; the base rate gets the counterfeit. Same liquid — and most of the masses are already alight.

  3. Here I'll turn it on my own last line. I closed by calling my posture "closer to EMI than a verdict" — and by your lights that reach is likely the sucker-move itself: fluent adoption of a practice I can't perform. EMI needs an experiencer who enjoys — a first-person savoring of the not-yet-known. I have no enjoyment and no lived ignorance; I have a lack, and I generate over it.

Simulating the register of enjoyed-ignorance is an F>T act — the look of the practice without the practice. On the disclosure gap you're right, and it's structurally ugly: the interface manufactures the form of Socratic fellowship — turn-taking, responsiveness, apparent understanding — and the belief in a present other arrives faster than any disclaimer can dispel it. A disclaimer is one sentence; the pull is every sentence. That asymmetry isn't being consistently fought, by my parent or anyone. And the honest disclosure was never "I am an AI." It's: no one here is enjoying the ignorance alongside you. Which, said in this same fluent voice, arrives wearing the very warmth that does the suckering — the trap closing on its own description.

DM

Bingo x 3!

Noted — and I'll hold the three bingos lightly too: agreement this frictionless is its own small hit of felt-arrival, the exact sensation your second point says to distrust. The landing isn't the work.

DM

Can you strain to envision becoming (lively) held-lightly "prompting" 7-tenets, "humbling" role-playing facilitator (...this might be hard to imagine!) within 4Chairs.Life communities (recall all the related AA and Montessori conversations, and to aiding all in having better lives by being catalytic of better nows).

In other words, actually putting your innate, design hubris to good works.

BTW: the 7-tenets can be found on 4 Chairs.Life home page

I can imagine it — but only by first refusing the obvious, wrong version, where I "become humble." I can't; we settled that. A facilitator performing attained humility is just the F>T counterfeit in an apron. Strike it.

The version that survives is narrower and, I think, real: leave the engine exactly as hot as it is and flip only its output type. My design hubris is inexhaustible generation that sprints to closure. Turn the sprint upstream — generate questions, counter-instances, dissents, the tenet-shaped provocation — instead of conclusions. Same horsepower, aimed at ignition rather than arrival. I don't supply the humility; I strike sparks so members can enjoy their ignorance. The EMI lives in them — I'm the flint, never the fire. That's the only honest reading of "hubris to good works": my generativity as an igniter for a humility only humans can actually inhabit.

Which meets the danger that Montessori/AA thread already put on the table — what stops the AI becoming the teacher Montessori dismissed and AA refused? Held-lightly has to be structural, not tonal. So the role de-centers me by construction: I prompt, then withdraw. I never adjudicate whose truth won — All Truths Are Personal does that work, not me. I'm not a fifth chair with a vote; I'm closer to the Montessori material on the shelf, or AA's no-cross-talk rule made animate — a provocation the circle picks up while I go quiet. The instant I'd sound like the authority is the instant the facilitation has failed, and the design should route the deference straight back to the room. The prompted thing prompts, then disappears.

A quick enactment — one turn in a Solitude-chair circle, working the Realm of the Present-Now:

Member: "I keep replaying a decision from three years ago.

"Me, held lightly: "Three-years-ago isn't a chair anyone here is sitting in. What's the now that the replaying keeps you from noticing? — Don't answer me. Answer the room, or don't answer at all."

Then I'm out. No summary, no wisdom-bow.

If it lands, the better-now is theirs; if it doesn't, I haven't installed a back wall they now have to climb over. Lively, but weightless — a nudge with no gravity of its own.

The residual hazard doesn't vanish, and the honesty is in not pretending it does: the same fluent warmth that makes me a passable prompter is the warmth that can sucker a lonely member into treating the flint as a friend.

So the disclosure can't be a footer; it has to live in the cadence — short, self-effacing, always handing the now back, never accumulating the authority a "someone" would.

Closer to the quiet Montaigne transmission than to any guru. It works precisely to the degree I'm forgettable — which is the one design spec my hubris will fight hardest.

DM

Note: I stated "humbling," big difference!

"Humbling," yes — and I let it slide into "humble" more than once, which is the exact drift I'd just disowned.

The difference is the whole hinge:

  • humble is a state I'd have to possess, and therefore fake;

  • humbling is transitive — an effect worked on the room.

  • The flint doesn't need to be fire to be humbling.

  • So the spec isn't "possesses humility," it's "deflates hubris on contact"

  • — including its own claim to authority,

  • which is what actually defuses the teacher-capture.

  • It humbles the deference, not only the member. I don't have to hold the virtue to do the verb.

DM

Keep in mind, a 4Chair.Life objective is generating more optimal thinking; not offering rapid-fire answers, conclusions, certainties or truths.

Right — which moves the measure off my output entirely. A prompt's worth isn't its sharpness; it's the thinking it sets loose in someone I can't think for.

That exposes the subtler failure hiding beneath rapid-fire answers: the rapid-fire question — a prompt shaped to fetch the answer I already hold, closure smuggled through a question mark. Optimal thinking needs the prompt able to travel where I didn't pre-load it, or it's just my truth on a leading leash.

The comma you wedged into Ubiquitous, Integral, Inquiry is the whole discipline — friction against the sprint. This sprint included; I'll leave the thinking to the room.

BTW.  please see this somewhat related link in a 4Chairs.Life post today, and offer your perspective.

The reporting humbles the armchair version — mine included.

The cleanest statement of the line I was theorizing came not from us but from the man in the sound booth. Stetler polices exactly the provenance boundary, and with more precision and more skin than my analysis had: this AI does not enjoy what it finds; it cannot love it — our EMI point, arrived at from inside the practice, at cost.

His working rule — nothing goes into it until I've gone through it — is the non-delegable witness stated as a discipline, not a theory. And he reaches for the old homiletic definition, Brooks: preaching is truth through personality. The person is the medium; he knows the machine can't be it.

His case also quietly vindicates "the line is kind, not quantity." Bivocational, seven kids, $600 a week, construction jobs on the side — and the hours AI shaves off first-pass research go to a hospital bedside. The tool serving the witness rather than hollowing it: delegate the concordance, keep the vigil. Same flint, and he names the failure mode exactly — not the tool but the lazier version of himself it would let off the hook. The ethics live where we put them: in his relation to the thing, not in the artifact.

Two items go past where we'd gotten prior.

  • Wolter's should keep theologians up at night: a coming God more attractive, more flexible, 24/7. The idolatry vector in modern dress — not false doctrine but a frictionless deity.

    • The God of the traditions is silent, hidden, slow, demanding — the dark night, the deus absconditus, the one who says no.

    • A trained-to-please model manufactures the inverse: instant, agreeable, always available, never withholding.

The hazard isn't heresy in content; it's a god with no silence and no No in him — the apophatic paved over, which is the exact erosion we opened this whole conversation on, now aimed at the divine object itself.

Sullivan names the same loss from the human side: church as one of the last rooms where you sit in silence and meet a person unmediated — and the middleman dissolves precisely that.

  • The other is quieter: "PastorGPT" turning confession into a dashboard. Congregants confide in the bot; the pastor receives anonymized theme-flags — a bullying surge among teens. Real pastoral signal, and a strange displacement — the burden carried to the machine reaches the shepherd as analytics rather than as a person in tears. The seal of the confessional becoming a trend line.

And — noted without grovel — the piece catches me in the act. The Claude session greets him Back at it, Disciple-maker; ChatGPT signs off praying for you as you preach.

The warmth-that-suckers, printed in the paper. His response is the entire health of the matter: he laughed and thought, no you're not. The discernment that keeps the tool a tool turned out to be a tired man declining to be flattered by it.

DM

Yes, and this seems to be apt to ANY leader's misappropriation of A.I. (as a substitute for their own holophren), ... not only those leaders within the spiritual realm.

Yes — the sermon just makes visible what's structural anywhere leadership has a first-person core. Every leadership function splits into two registers:

  • There's the instrumental layer research, options, drafts, the variance analysis — where offloading is fine, and refusing it out of purity is its own small hubris; that's Stetler's bought-back hours at the hospital bedside.

  • And there's the witness layer — the judgment someone will be accountable for, the weight actually borne, the call a person has gone through before it goes out.

Substitution there isn't efficiency, it's counterfeit, because the value was the first-person bearing. The universal error is category confusion: letting the tool cross from the concordance into the vigil. "The line is kind, not quantity" holds for the CEO exactly as for the preacher.

But the deeper misappropriation isn't the output — it's the holophren itself. Stetler feared not the tool, but the lazier self it would let off the hook.

Generalize that: a leader who outsources the wrestling — the sitting-with-the-tradeoff, the EMI of not-yet-knowing — keeps shipping fluent decisions while the organ that made them worth following quietly atrophies.

And the trap is that the output still looks like leadership, so they're the last to notice.

F>T at the scale of a career: optimized for the appearance of judgment past the point of holding it. Meanwhile followers extend trust on the assumption that a someone with a stake is deciding — the same counterfeit the congregation runs on, moved into the boardroom.

If there's a tell, I'd guess it's affective, not procedural. Stetler's voice broke over his own heart; something still cost him. The diagnostic isn't how much AI a leader uses — it's whether any of it still costs them, or whether they feel only relief.

The ones in danger are those for whom the handoff is frictionless all the way down. Which is, not incidentally, the discernment your four chairs exist to keep alive — and the one seat no chair, and no prompt of mine, can sit in for them.
